Lovely Inn for the Independent Travele
We just spent four lovely days at Sol e Luna while enjoying the island. I have read many of the reviews and decided that the negative ones are from people who want hotels with many services. We are independent travelers and enjoy staying at small family-run inns and guest houses (not hostels!), similar to B&Bs in the U.S. without the gourmet breakfasts. Yes, the rooms are a sideline of the restaurant and the owner is not always there, but we were always able to find someone to help us with pleasure. Yes, there are two (not hundreds of) flights of stone steps up to the rooms, but Terry offered to help us with our luggage if we needed it. I wouldn’t stay here, however, if you have mobility issues. Our a/c worked, the king-sized bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was modern with all amenities. Daily housekeeping was excellent. The access to the stairs is off to the side of the restaurant. You don’t have to parade through the diners to get to your room. We especially enjoyed the balcony outside our room. There are a microwave, mini-frig, and sink for preparing a light breakfast or storing drinks. The coffeepot is a Nespresso — bring pods or buy them from the hotel. We didn’t buy the E20 breakfast basket, but bought pastries and fruit at the nearby market. The inn provided beach towels. Sol e Luna is a quiet, beautiful retreat for travelers who want a differen t experience from the standard hotel. It’s not really suitable for families with children. We had our phones, the Wifi worked, and we found restaurants online. You do need a car, even though Grand Case isn’t far away. You will want to explore the various bays, towns, and parks. Waiting for a taxi would be a huge waste of time. And do dine at the restaurant if you want a delicious upscale dinner in a lovely setting.

Love it, just minor problem
Loved this place. It is technically a restaurant with rooms. most of the rooms seem to have a kitchenette and balcony so breakfast is taken in the room (love that but you go to get your breakfast fixings at a nearby supermarket – FABULOUS supermarket! Thank God the French were there. The hotel is not “centrally located in the sense that it isn’t really possible to walk anywhere from there. We had a car so it was fine. I honestly can’t imagine that you could manage on St. Martin without a car. The room was charming – Vanille. It seemed recently updated and all was good. Hot water and shower were nice. Internet worked. Cleaning staff courteous and efficient. Be aware there are steps. The rooms are on a hillside so depending on which room you have, you will have some steps or a lot of steps. You will have steps (stone staircase that can be steep). Also, because it is a restaurant first and a hotel second, there really isn’t any “help”. You will carry your luggage up and down. A minor issue came up that was troubling: one evening a couple came to our balcony asking if we knew how to get out of the hotel. Someone had locked the front gate and there was no way for them to exit. We had a key to the front gate but they did not. We lent them our key and it was all good but in the event of an emergency, it would be good to have an automatic lock system that you can push a button and the gate unlocks from inside. also, not seeming to have anyone on staff on the property after restaurant hours, is a problem since many travelers don’t have cell service outsider their home country. Phone numbers are listed on a sheet in the room but without phones, it doesn’t help. So, be aware that you will have to be very self sufficient. We were and it was a great stay. We’d go back.

Our Caribbean hideaway
My wife and I stayed at Sol e Luna Inn for a week. The owner (Christian) booked the Vanilla room for us, which is located at the top of the property. The inn is located in a quiet area on the French side, away from the noise of the Dutch side and just a 5 minutes drive from the famous Orient Bay. Sol e Luna restaurant is part of the property and is right at the entrance. The owner and chef of the restaurant is the same french gentleman who runs the inn (we could not go to the restaurant because it was under repair prior to the high season). The place is very quiet, after receiving the keys and a small description of the place from Christian, we were on our own the rest of the week and only returned to see the owner a few times during our stay. Likewise, we barely saw other guests throughout the week. This was perfect for us because, far from seeking the pampering of an all inclusive hotel, we were looking for a quiet and private place where we could relax and go on our own. The inn features private parking and a small pool, the rooms are on the top, so it is necessary to follow a stairway path to reach them (at nights, the way to the rooms is rather dark, so be careful when going up the stairs, and even more if it has rained, because the way can become slippery). The rooms are very clean and comfortable, with a unique decor. Ours had a small balcony where we had breakfast in the morning (the inn does not offer breakfast, but there are supermarkets nearby where you can buy anything you need). Our room also featured a small flat screen TV, satellite TV (French channels only), DVD player, air conditioning, refrigerator, dishwasher, a mosquito net, ceiling fan, hot water and a big and comfortable bed. Everything flawless and working properly. Our room was cleaned every day and left in immaculate condition. Our experience at Sol e Luna was excellent, the place was just what we were looking for and just as described by other guests. Christian is an easygoing gentleman always willing to help and make guests feel comfortable. We had some issues with our credit cards and we lost a connection on our arrival but we could easily sort things out without any problem. I recommend this inn to anyone who wants tranquility and comfort. We had a rented a car, so we had no problem in going all around such a small island during the day and returning to the inn at nights. Orient bay can be seen from the balcony of our room and it is just a 5-minute drive, Grand Case (and its multiple dining options) is no more than a 10-minute drive, Marigot is about 15 minutes from the Inn, Maho beach is about 20 minutes and Philisburgh is about 25 minutes (we went on low season, so I assume that the traffic on the streets was lower than normal). If you want to go party at night and drink a lot, I recommend finding accommodation on the Dutch side (e.g. Simpson Bay) instead, because despite being a small island, the roads are curvy, narrow, dark and poorly marked). I highly recommend Sol e Luna Inn and will definitely return on my next trip to Sint Maarten / Saint Martin. PROS: very quiet location, great value, flawless room, near Orient Bay and Grand Case. CONS: no breakfast (at least during our stay), “far” from the night life area. Room Tip: Rooms located on the upper part of the property have a balcony that overlooks the pond
