Lovely Inn for the Independent Traveler
We just spent four lovely days at Sol e Luna while enjoying the island. I have read many of the reviews and decided that the negative ones are from people who want hotels with many services. We are independent travelers and enjoy staying at small family-run inns and guest houses (not hostels!), similar to B&Bs in the U.S. without the gourmet breakfasts. Yes, the rooms are a sideline of the restaurant and the owner is not always there, but we were always able to find someone to help us with pleasure. Yes, there are two (not hundreds of) flights of stone steps up to the rooms, but Terry offered to help us with our luggage if we needed it. I wouldn’t stay here, however, if you have mobility issues. Our a/c worked, the king-sized bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was modern with all amenities. Daily housekeeping was excellent. The access to the stairs is off to the side of the restaurant. You don’t have to parade through the diners to get to your room. We especially enjoyed the balcony outside our room. There are a microwave, mini-frig, and sink for preparing a light breakfast or storing drinks. The coffeepot is a Nespresso — bring pods or buy them from the hotel. We didn’t buy the E20 breakfast basket, but bought pastries and fruit at the nearby market. The inn provided beach towels. Sol e Luna is a quiet, beautiful retreat for travelers who want a different experience from the standard hotel. It’s not really suitable for families with children. We had our phones, the Wifi worked, and we found restaurants online. You do need a car, even though Grand Case isn’t far away. You will want to explore the various bays, towns, and parks. Waiting for a taxi would be a huge waste of time. And do dine at the restaurant if you want a delicious upscale dinner in a lovely setting.

Just Perfect!
The Inn is a true hidden gem only 10-15 minutes from one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. We stayed a week in the Jasmine suite and could have stayed a month. Perfectly appointed and decorated by Bridgette, our inside/outside living space allowed for relaxing morning coffee and French style breakfasts, Yoga and covered seating away from the elements. We also enjoyed the adjacent pool area and our own personal sun deck. It was quiet, private, very French and very romantic. Wow! Room Tip: Jasmine. Hands down!

Wonderful stay during honeymoon
We had an amazing stay in the Jasmine Suite at Sol E Luna Dec 31-Jan 7. We parked our rental inside the gates of the property, were shown our suite — relaxed ‘check in’ — definitely kind of thing where you poke around for someone to let you in, but that’s the way of the island! no huge lobby desk with 8 customer service reps behind it.The outdoor living area was perfect — we had a two-burner cook top, fridge, sink, cabinet space, coffeemaker, toaster. We had breakfast (baguette from the Boulangerie Cul de Sac down the street, or Le Moulin in Grand Case; cheeses from the Simply Market right at the roundabout) every day sitting outside looking over the mountains and Etange Chevrise (small lake right outside Sol E Luna property). It was hard to peel ourselves away to head to the beach/other excursions! Other reviews mentioned ‘stolen’ wine from the outdoor area, but we had zero problems. Another couple was in the suite directly adjacent (Nacre) but we rarely crossed paths. Definitely feels like a private villa. Plunge pool was very nice too — we only used it once because we’re beach people but it was fun to jump in after a long hot day. One minor thing: didnt bother us but it could bother some — you cant entirely close off the bedroom from the bathroom. the wall doesnt go all the way to the ceiling; theres about 3-4 ft — not that you can see over but it’s not like shutting the door leads to total privacy. Had dinner in the restaurant our second night. Decor is lovely. most of the tables are in the open air which is nice. I had a sweetbread mushroom “open ravioli” which was basically two sheets of pasta filled with morels, shitakes, an amazing sauce. excellent. what really stood out (in a trip full of above-average food) was the dessert sampler — creme brulee, chocolate mousse, vanilla ice cream with this kind of espresso granita (?), lemony custard cake — i’m not doing a good job of description but they were all so well done! Overall, if you are someone who doesn’t want constant swim up bar, cruise-style entertainment, appreciates a calm atmosphere, hands-off but available management, classy but understated decor/vibe, and is willing to have a little adventure — definitely need a car in order to get out and see the island from Sol E Luna — this is the perfect place! We would go back in a heartbeat. Room Tip: Jasmine was beautiful and has the most outdoor space – sunbathing area w two chaises, and a table an…

Beautiful property and location
We spent two weeks at Sol e Luna and enjoyed every moment. The design of the property is ideal with a wide vista to greet you each morning. Tastfully furnished, clean, quiet with an excellent restaurant on site. The location provides easy access to Orient, Pinel, Happy Bay and Bay Rouge as well as all the restaurants in Grand Case. Secure parking also. The owners, Christian, Bridgett and their daughter Charlotte were very attentive as were all the staff. This is a well run property to which we will return. Room Tip: The Jasmine Suite was our favorite but Nacre comes close.

Amazing vacation experience
My husband and I just returned from a “babymoon” in St. Martin. We stayed at Sol e Luna in the Jasmine suite. The layout has been changed from what is on the website but is still similar in style. Christian ushered us to our room on arrival with a plate of snacks (water, olives, apple). The villa is so beautiful! A big bedroom with large closet/bathroom. Very open style. We did not use the mosquito net as it made me feel somewhat claustrophobic (but that’s my issue lol). Outside there is an open kitchenette which was very clean. We didn’t cook but did prepare cold food and the dishes, silverware, and coffee maker were all clean. Minor detail: coffee pot did spill and sink spout sprayed a bit. There are multiple seating areas, a few tables, couch area and 2 lounge chairs in the sun (umbrella as well). I LOVED making my coffee and then basking in the morning sun. I loved viewing the night sky as well after a full day. We picked one day to relax at the villa and we used the pool as well. There was no one else in the pool and it was a perfect pool for 2 people. The cleaning lady was great. On the day we stayed in she waited for us to go up to the pool area and then cleaned thoroughly so as to not disturb our day. That was a nice touch. We rented a car and never had a problem getting a spot in the lot inside the gate. Christian gave us the gate code and we had no problem getting in or out. We drove to the our daily activities though apparently Orient Beach is walkable. We did walk to the local bakery (boulangerie) across the way and the pastries were tasty and fresh of course. We found the location convenient to drive to Orient Bay, Pinel beach, Grand Case. We did not care to go to the Dutch side aside from the airport so that didn’t matter to us. We ate in the restaurant as well. The restaurant is beautiful and the food is delicious. We felt like real VIP. Christian’s wife and daughter (Charlotte) both came over to speak to us even though they were very busy. We took our time and did not feel rushed at all. At the end, Charlotte came out and helped us prepare a detailed itinerary for our trip (we went early on) and it was really, really helpful. They also gave us a 10% discount as hotel guests. We were there for 6 nights and expected to have to pay for a full week as the rates are per week. We in fact paid for 6 nights, which was a nice touch and savings. We thought sol e luna was a great deal and would definitely recommend it to a friend and stay there again! I wish we were still there!

First the layout. Sol e Luna is primarily a restaurant on top of which there are 6 rooms. Parking is behind a coded gate and shared with the restaurant. The small parking area may be full due to the restaurant – if so you’ll have to park across the street. Access to the rooms is somewhat through the restaurant via the stairway on the right. On the first level of rooms, through a lockable gate, are Jasmine, Nacre and the pool. These rooms are directly over the restaurant. Behind the rooms, up a few modern wooden steps, is the raised pool. Further up the main stairway are the other rooms which overlook / overhang the pool and the first level. These rooms are set further back but appear to have unobstructed views from their balconies. We stayed in the best room we felt: Jasmine. The outside kitchen was perfect: full fridge, microwave, 2 flattop burners, toaster, coffee maker (coffee and filters supplied), a variety of cups, glasses, plates, etc. All nicely done. The small kitchen table and chairs were quality wood. The bedroom was large with a comfortable bed and stylish bathroom. Quality stone tiled floor. An expansive ceiling with mosquito netting (not used by us). A large flat TV (also unused). The room safe was not functional. As there is no window glass a decision is needed for air conditioning: either close all the window slates and run the air with the lights on / in the dark, or kill the air and open the doors / windows / slates. We alternated. Back outside was a covered sitting area, a continuation of our kitchen, with full couch and chairs plus a dining table for 4. Then out to the very front of the building was our private open veranda with table, chairs, umbrella and 2 lounge chairs with terry-cloth covers. Nice view of the pond and a fantastic breeze. Throughout the outside area was a quality wooden deck. All decorations were tasteful. Restaurant noise was never an issue but each evening a wonderful aroma reminded you it was there. Unless you have a phobia of planes, the nearby airport only added some occasional background interest as planes ascended (not one jet during our stay). The pool was very convenient to our place. The deck had room enough for the 3 lounge chairs. The pool itself was great and a perfect depth – an adult pool. If we had to share with other guests it might seem smaller but we saw none during our off-season stay. This didn’t seem the type of place for noisy guests but they could be a bummer, especially for the rooms over the pool. The landscaping throughout is nicely done and well maintained. The service in general was great: a friendly housekeeper and the owner/chef Christian could be charming. The top of Orient Beach was a timed 14 minutes easy walk, the end of which is through a condo complex. Might be a bit hot but at either end is a swim (beach or our pool). Tips: – In Cul de Sac, within walking distance for some, the pizzeria Au Grain de Sel was a pleasant break from the more expensive restaurants in the area. Great pizza and a charming couple run the show. – Definitely with walking distance was Le Taitu. Moderately expensive but reasonable and nice food and service. – Avoid Phillipsburg: either overrun with the cruise crowd or mostly shuttered. Completely lacking in charm. – Instead make a beeline for Marigot and lunch at Le Tropicana on the Marina Royal: a tradition. – On Pinel Island, instead of paying for an umbrella make the 5 minute walk over to the North Beach – beautiful with a nice breeze!

Even better than last year!
We so enjoyed our stay at Sol E Luna last year, that we booked it again this year. But this year was extra special because we were on the island for our daughter’s wedding. We probably could have rented a villa for all of us, but when we were each settled into our own rooms, it felt exactly like a villa! Out of the 6 rooms/suites, we took up 4 of the rooms & Christian & his family were in the other two. It was awesome! What a beautiful property. As you can see on their website, each room has a distinct personality & feel to it. My two favorites are Jasmine (where we stayed) & Nacre (where the bride & groom stayed). Everyone else loved their rooms, too! After staying in Suite Jasmine, I’m totally spoiled by its outdoor living space. I can’t picture staying at any other place! Every night before bed, we’d sit out on the deck enjoying the beatiful Caribbean nights. While I love an ocean view, the view from our room at Sol E Luna can’t be beat. The pool is just the right size for taking an early morning or evening dip. The water is nice and warm. The grounds surrounding SEL are gorgeous. The gardener comes every evening. Everyone who works at SEL is friendly & accommodating. I totally love our housekeeper. She speaks very little English & is always smiling. Always! The owners are straight-up people & are a pleasure to deal with. I delight in seeing them. I wrote a more expansive review last year….go take a peak! In a nutshell, Sol E Luna is the place for us on the French side. They’re making some renovations soon (September), so check out the website again in October! Room Tip: The biggest rooms are Jasmine, Mango & Nacre. If you like outdoor living, it’s Jasmine.

A complete sensual experience!
I always get a giggle when people say, “I don’t care about the room. Who spends time in the room, anyway?” I got killed last year when I posted a less-than-stellar review of our hotel because I didn’t like the room. Well, I sleep late, I nap & I go to bed early. I love a nice room! Sol E Luna to the rescue. I would recommend SEL to anyone who doesn’t need direction, room service or amenities (other than housekeeping). If you like a big resort & staff to make arrangements for you, etc., then it’s not for you. It’s more like a mini villa or an apartment. I pretended that I lived there. The grounds are beautiful. All the flowers were in bloom. We had a gardenia tree right outside our open-air kitchen. As I lay in bed, my view was of palm trees & a beautiful yellow hibiscus. Sure beats the broken down tool shed I was looking at last year! We stayed in the Jasmine Suite. It had an outdoor sundeck, two outdoor seating areas, and a semi-enclosed Creole style kitchen. The kitchen was more than adequate & was well stocked for making a light meal. The bedroom & bathroom were beautiful, too. You could either shut the louvered wooden windows & door for sleeping with the AC, or throw them open & let the Caribbean breeze cool you while you sleep. The property is gated. Christian will give you a code to open & close the gates. There is surprisingly little, or no, noise from the restaurant, seeing as Jasmine is right above it. The palm fronds rustled continually. SEL is the most serene place I have ever stayed. Granted, we were off season & the occupancy was low; but it was so quiet. There was no traffic noise and no GC airport noise at all. Once the trash trucks came! The outdoor living was so awesome that I can’t even imagine staying cooped up in a room again. As an added bonus, there were 2 beach chairs, an umbrella & 2 noodles and you get 10% off dinner in the restaurant (which will get a stellar review from us, too). Housekeeping was awesome. Her smile would light up a room! On the other hand, when she had to give us the weather report, she looked so sad. When it was determined that it was going to rain “tout la jour,” she felt worse than we did! The linens were changed every day & the place was clean as a whistle! When we were leaving, she made a special effort to come down to our car to say good-bye & that she “would watch for us” again. Priceless. To wrap it up, SEL was intoxicating. Yup, that’s the word. A complete sensual experience. The sweetness of the flowers, the faint smell of olive oil & garlic from the restaurant, the sea breeze, the beauty of the mountain hills, the salt pond, the rustling of the palm fronds, the music wafting from the restaurant, the tree frogs, the clearing skies, the southern constellations, the red star. As I sat there, taking in all of this beauty, I thought to myself that it was a pretty good way to spend the evenings. We both loved SEL & will definitely go back to Suite Jasmine (the other suites are awesome, too … but I loved living in a tree house)!
